The Story Behind The Stones

Sapphires & Rubies

Did you know that Rubies and Sapphires both happen to belong to the corundum mineral family? It was not until the 18th Century that it was clearly established that sapphires and rubies are in fact the same material, corundum, natural aluminium oxide. The name corundum is probably derived from the Sanskrit kuruvinda meaning Ruby, the name given to red corundum. When it is found in other colours it is called Sapphire. Next to diamonds, corundum is the hardest mineral on earth, its durability making it very suitable for engagement rings. I hope you enjoy my latest newsletter on these most beguiling of stones.
